You held the phone directly above the document and shot straight down, but the image still looks wrong — the edges bow outward, the corners seem to peel away, and the margins look curved even though the center text is fine.
That's barrel distortion — not a problem with your technique, but with your phone's lens geometry.
What Barrel Distortion Is
Barrel distortion makes straight lines near the frame edges curve outward — bowing away from the center. The name comes from what the image looks like: slightly inflated, like a photo taken of a reflection in a barrel.
It shows up most when you photograph flat objects close-up. The center looks accurate, but the four edges of the document appear to bow. The corners seem to pull away from the camera.
Every smartphone camera has barrel distortion to some degree. It's what happens when you fit a wide-angle lens into a thin phone. Phone makers fix it partially in software — but that fix is tuned for regular photos, not close-up document capture.
Barrel Distortion vs. Perspective Distortion: What's the Difference
These are two separate problems that frequently appear together in phone document photos.
Barrel distortion makes straight edges curve. It comes from the lens geometry itself and is present even when you shoot perfectly flat-on.
Perspective distortion makes a rectangle look like a trapezoid. It comes from camera angle — shooting from the side, above, or at a diagonal. One side of the document appears larger because it's physically closer to the lens.
When you photograph a document at an angle with a smartphone, you typically get both: curved edges from barrel distortion and trapezoidal shape from perspective. The fix handles them in a specific order.
How Four-Point Perspective Correction Addresses Both
Manual four-point correction places your handles at the true document corners — curvature included.
The tool maps those four corner positions to a perfect rectangle, correcting the angle distortion directly. Placing handles at the real document edges — not the apparent ones — absorbs most of the barrel distortion in the process.
It's not a perfect fix — a proper lens profile would be more exact. But for document readability, the four-point method gets the output flat and straight, which is the actual goal.
Where the Four-Point Method Has Limits
Heavy barrel distortion in the center of a document won't be fully corrected. Shoot a large document too close — filling the whole frame — and the center may still look slightly curved after correction.
The practical fix: back up slightly when shooting. Leave a little margin around the document in the frame rather than filling the viewfinder completely. This keeps the document away from the edges of the frame where barrel distortion is strongest. You'll correct a bit more area, but the document itself will be in the better-behaved center zone of the image.
Step-by-Step: Fixing a Barrel-Distorted Document Photo
- Upload the photo to PerspectiveFix. Drag in, click to browse, or Ctrl+V to paste.
- Zoom the image in the editor before placing corners. The zoom lens magnifies the area around your cursor. Place each corner handle at the actual corner of the document — not just near it. Precise placement is what makes the output look clean.
- Don't rush the corner placement. Barrel distortion means the document edge curves slightly inward near the center. Place your handle at the true geometric corner of the paper, not at the midpoint of the edge. The transformation corrects the rest.
- Check the preview. Text should run horizontally. Edges should look straight. If something looks off, adjust the closest handle.
- Apply Sharpen in the Adjust panel if needed. Barrel distortion correction involves resampling pixels. A small amount of sharpening (10–20 on the slider) can recover edge crispness. Don't overdo it — text sharpening past 40 or so starts to look artificial.

For Researchers and Archivists: Handling Old Printed Documents
Old documents often have physical warping on top of lens distortion. Newspaper clippings, manuscript pages, mid-century reports — the paper itself isn't flat. The page may not lie fully flat, which creates a curved surface rather than a flat one.
Four-point correction works on the corners but doesn't correct for page curl in the middle. For heavily warped pages, the best approach is to press the document flat under a glass sheet before photographing. A cheap picture frame works well — lay the document under the glass and shoot through it.
The glass adds a slight reflection, but it's less damaging to the final result than uncorrected page curl.
When to Use Enhance Mode After Correction
After fixing the geometry, hit the Enhance button in PerspectiveFix. Two modes:
- Magic Color — reduces background noise, boosts text contrast, keeps color. Good for printed documents and photos of photos.
- Deep Ink — high-contrast black-and-white conversion. Makes handwritten notes and photocopies extremely readable. Not for color documents.
